Mowden marks Number Confidence Week

As part of Number Confidence Week, Mowden Hall School was delighted to welcome Newby Leisure, the company behind the school’s brand-new Pre-Prep playground, for a special workshop on “How to Build a Playground.”

The session, led by George and Heidi from Newby Leisure, gave pupils a fascinating insight into the real-world mathematics involved in playground design and construction. From scale drawings and angles to budgeting, costing, area and perimeter, the children explored how maths is applied beyond the classroom to bring creative projects to life.

Taking place throughout the day on Tuesday 4 November, the visit offered pupils from Years 2-8 a unique link between STEM education and practical application, aligning perfectly with this year’s Number Confidence Week theme of “Maths and Money.”

Following the session, maths lessons will continue the theme by focusing on everyday financial literacy - helping younger pupils recognise coins and values, while older pupils tackled budgeting challenges such as planning outings or managing festive spending.

Abigail Henry, Head of Maths at Mowden Hall School, said: “This was a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to see how mathematics shapes the world around them. Partnering with Newby Leisure helped to bring learning to life in a way that was exciting, engaging, and deeply relevant.

Number Confidence Week is an annual event hosted by National Numeracy to help people improve their confidence with numbers and everyday math.
