Fostering Independence - Advantages of boarding at Mowden Hall

Education in a boarding sense goes beyond the academic. The multifaceted nature of boarding at Mowden Hall offers many benefits physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually. Boarders have a great many opportunities that enhance their development into young adults, preparing them with the skills required to have independent confidence in the decisions they will make which will ultimately shape their future.

The boarding journey begins with an adjustment to living away from home. Learning to become self-reliant and to adapt to a new environment is all part of fostering our boarder's independence. Our boarding pupils are part of a close-knit, supportive, family like community. Lifelong friendships are formed, and the boarding experience instills values of teamwork, collaboration, and a deep sense of belonging, creating a home away from home for our children. Our boarders support each other with the valuable coping skills of living away from home. Interacting so closely with each other, they help each other with daily practicalities and by offering reassuring informal advice and guidance. Much of their learning around social, emotional and personal skills comes from their peer group.

Living so closely with those from many different backgrounds promotes a greater understanding of and openness to living in a modern and diverse culture.  It also requires the navigation of many different social dynamics, which includes a need for constant awareness (both of self and others). Characteristics such as empathy, tolerance, and reflection are constantly developed while boarding. Children learn these skills best through their daily interactions with each other while staff are here to support and informally guide them with this.

Taking and developing personal responsibility is a large part of becoming independent. There is a certain level of expectation placed on boarders to take responsibility for their own choices and decisions. This can begin at the very start of the day with time management, organising themselves and their own personal space, ensuring they are presentable and have the right attitude to begin their day well. As this positive decision making is continually encouraged, it enables boarders to appreciate accountability and consequence. They naturally begin to dedicate more time to taking responsibility for their own personal growth and wellbeing.

Boarding at Mowden Hall School offers children safe ways to stretch comfort zones, build confidence, resilience and independence. Here at Mowden Hall we encourage opportunities for our boarders to try new experiences and ‘fail safely’ among their friends and supportive staff. Developing this deeper understanding of their own capabilities allows them to grow independently, using the valuable skills of self evaluation and reflection, essential qualities for future success.

Many of our boarders have an early start in fostering independence. The nurturing environment here at Mowden Hall allows this development to take shape in a strongly supported way with experienced staff who are skilled in recognising and responding to the needs of younger children. Teamed with peer support and close friendships, this home from home experience is an ideal option for early boarders.
