Success at Tynedale Festival 2017

 Tynedale Music Festival

On Saturday 11th March our solo singers competed in the Tynedale Music Festival held in the Queens’ Hall, Hexham. James and Katie sung ‘Chim Chim Cheree’ and ‘Who will Buy’, from Oliver in a class of seven competitors. Both performances were well received, and James was awarded second place.

Grace, Magnus and Heather faced some tough competition in their group, again a class of seven. Heather and Magnus sung beautifully, but the eventual winner was a very talented performer. Grace also sang well, her performance lit up by her assured stage presence and she was awarded second place. At the end of the festival it was rewarding to find she was awarded the Most Entertaining Solo Performance award as well as the ‘Mrs J.E Rylance memorial trophy’ for her performance of ‘Popular’ from the musical Wicked.

A specially formed Junior Choir of 27 children, consisting of Year 6 choristers and volunteers from Year 5, took part in the Tynedale Festival on 17 March.  After a short practice in school we boarded the coach and travelled to Hexham.  Arriving in good time at the Queen’s Hall, we were able to watch the previous category, featuring younger children from rural schools.  This gave us a chance to soak up the atmosphere and get used to the size of the auditorium, before it was time for us to perform.
We had prepared music for two classes – Under 11 Hymn Singing (Sing Hosanna/When I needed a Neighbour) and Choral Singing (Land of the Silver Birch/Dem Dry Bones).  Our pieces, expertly accompanied by Mrs Barnes, all went well, and made our teachers and supporters very proud.  Afterwards we listened to the Under 13 class before the judging took place. Everyone had sung their hearts out, and the adjudicator was fair and constructive in her comments on all the choirs.  We were praised for our dynamics, diction and tuning and (very pleasingly) for communicating a sense of enjoyment in our singing, and were thrilled to be commended and awarded first place in both our categories.  Amber and Archie went on stage to receive the trophies on behalf of the Mowden Junior Choir.
Many thanks to Mr Fowlds and Mrs Bailey for helping on the day, and to friends and parents who came along to support us.
