Traditions and Ethos of Mowden

The school's aims are toprepare the children for a rapidly changing world. It is our belief that in offering our pupils a broad range of opportunities, we are enabling them to experience success at many different levels, giving them a strong feeling of self-belief and purpose.

We believe that our small class sizes and our caring approach to boarding ensure that the basic grounding that children receive at Mowden Hall during their formative years will give them a significant advantage in the future.

The school is grouped into three main departments, comprising a nursery, a purpose built Pre-Prep and the Preparatory School. In year 7, all pupils have the wonderful opportunity to spend a whole term at the splendid Château de Sauveterre in south-west France, where they learn French in a stimulating and beautiful environment.

Mowden Hall is proud of its reputation for being a caring school, which provides a stimulating all-round education in a positive and encouraging environment.

Mowden Hall's main building is a handsome country house dating from the 1850s. The building is situated in its own spacious parkland, overlooking the Tyne Valley in the heart of the Northumberland countryside. Many modern additions and conversions have been built on to the back of the school in recent years, without in any way spoiling the façade or view at the front.

The school offers extensive playing fields, three tennis courts, a large and well equipped sports hall and a modern indoor heated swimming pool. There are thriving music and drama departments, centred around the purpose built theatre. Classrooms are spacious and well-equipped in separate buildings. The I.T. department has the latest technology installed and the whole school is linked through its computer network.
