SUNDAY 14th JANUARY 2018 – ST JAMES’S CHURCH, NEWTON
The first service of term gave boarders, staff and visitors an opportunity to celebrate both Epiphany and the New Year.  Hymn choices reflected the dual themes and, following the tradition of recent years, featured three splendid soloists (Mr Bailey, Mrs Martin and Miss Serbrock on this occasion) representing the Three Kings.  The headmaster took the 23rd Psalm, which Lucy read with clarity and conviction, as the starting point for his fascinating talk on courage, exemplified by the inspirational life and work of Florence Nightingale.  Before members of Year 6 read a selection of appropriate prayers, the Choir sang with great energy, adopting a distinctly ‘country vibe’ (as well as a slight Epiphany makeover) to the lively Christmas hymn ‘Go tell it on the Mountain’.
Energised by the enjoyable service and bracing walk back to school, everyone appreciated morning refreshments before the excitements of the rest of the day.
