1st XI v Durham B Team
On Wednesday 28th April the 1st XI Cricket team played Durham B team in a 30 over match at home. We won the toss and put them in to bat. We started well with energetic fielding and good bowling which led to a wicket from Bertie, making the score 2 for 1 at the end of the first over. It took a while to get our next wicket because the batsmen were hitting the ball all over the place. But eventually we got the break through with Ben Brown the bowler and Bertie with the catch. Towards the end of the innings we were getting tired and the fielding became slightly sloppy; but with Harry’s two wickets, James’ Gibbons taking two more and another wicket taken by Bertie as well as a wicket by Lewis the score reached 128 for 8 by the end of their 30 overs.
We took a short break and had a team talk. We went in to bat. Unfortunately we started badly, losing 1 wicket before tea at 4 o’clock. After tea, Bertie and Harry were just getting in to their stride when unfortunately, Harry lost his wicket by playing across his stumps. One over later, Bertie was caught. We kept hitting the ball in the air with exactly the same result, repeatedly getting caught out. Ben Remnant batted exceptionally well, staying in and helping us to close in on their score but, despite all of his efforts, we couldn’t reach their score.
We had lost the match by 34 runs. We need to work on keeping the ball down when we hit it and if we do hit it in the air, to make sure it goes for 6! On behalf of the team I would like to thank Mr Weldon and Mr Carrick for coaching us and the kitchen ladies for making us tea.Bertie Spence
1st XI Cricket v Grindon Hall
On Thursday 20th may the 1st XI played Grindon Hall at home. We won the toss and chose to field first. We started well with a few wickets and tight fielding and they were not the strongest batsmen either. Their final score was 55-6. We went in to bat confidently but we wanted to win the match too quickly and we kept losing silly wickets; however we still won the match and we were very pleased.
