National athletics in Birmingham - June 29th 2009

On the 28th of June, six girls set off for the National athletics in Birmingham. We stopped off on the way to spend the night at Ffion's house. We had supper there and played around, and then went to bed. We got up early, so we had time to leave by quarter to seven. Alice had gone up the night before with her parents because she was one of the first on.

Jessica and Saskia were on first. Jessica threw well and held her nerve in her discus. She got into the final, and came fifth overall. Saskia through a personal best of 8 meters 52 in her shot event, overall coming seventh. Alice was leading throughout most of her 1500 metres, but didn't have enough left for the final 100 metres and was overtaking coming fifth overall. There was a big wait until Ffion, Honor and Eliza were on.

We had a look around and watched some of the events. Honor was next with her javelin. She threw well but just didn't make it into the final coming ninth. Ffion was next. She led through out most of her 300 metres race and was just pipped on the line with the winner getting a time of 43.4 and Ffion getting a time of 43.5. Eliza had to wait till five a clock for her javelin event. When it eventually came, she found it tough and unfortunately didn't qualify for the final. Ffion went up for her presentation and was awarded her silver medal. We stopped off for supper at an Italian restaurant and then headed back to school.

We arrived back at school at about 1:30am and slept in sick bay. It was a great day and was a great experience for us all. We would like to thank Mrs White and Mr Debil for coaching us and taking us there, Mrs Thompson for letting us stay at her house, and the kitchen ladies for a packed snacks and breakfast.

    North-east athletics trials June 2009

On the 16th of June, eleven people where chosen to participate in the North-East athletics to try and qualify for the Nationals. The girls' field events and the boys' track events were first followed by the girls' track events and the boys' field events. Honor and Eliza both did well in their javelin events, with Honor and Eliza qualifying. Eliza got a personal best of 17.58 metres, so they both qualified for the Nationals. Saskia and Hannah both tried really hard in their shot events. Saskia came second, but got the qualifying distance so was through to the Nationals. Hannah did really well but unfortunately didn't qualify. Francesca and Jess found it challenging with the cage around them when they threw the discus. They both performed well and Jess came first with a personal best of 19.20 metres. Francesca threw well but didn't qualify. Harry and Ben were up next in their 1500 metres. Harry was in a tough group and unfortunately didn't qualify. Ben ran a brilliant race and led throughout most of it, but was very unlucky not to win and qualify. Alice won her race, finishing really well. Greg was next and was also in a tough category, in his long jump. He jumped well but unfortunately didn't qualify. Ffion ran well in her 300 meters race and broke the North-East record with a time of 42.63 seconds. Everyone did really well and Saskia, Honor, Eliza, Alice, Jessica and Ffion have all qualified for the Nationals in Birmingham. We would like to thank Mrs White and Mr Debil for coaching us and taking us there and back, the supporters for cheering us on and the kitchen ladies for a lovely packed lunch.
