Shrewsbury School Cross Country

Within moments of crossing the finishing line last Saturday, the Mowden Hall Under 11 and Under 13 Cross Country team jumped into the minibus for a journey south to Shrewsbury School for the Prep Schools’ Cross Country Championships. After a memorable stop off at Tebay Services, where the usual sandwich was replaced by a warm plate of fish and chips, we arrived in Shropshire to be greeted by our hosts for the weekend. The girls were shown to Moser’s Hall and the boys to Churchill’s Hall where they slept soundly after the events of the day.

The following morning we were all invited to attend the wonderful Harvest Festival in School Chapel where we saw many ex-Mowden pupils. This was followed by a remarkable brunch and a short tour of the School’s facilities before we had to register for the races. The Under 11s set off first and positioned themselves well in a packed group. Despite being confronted with the infamous “Heartbreak Hill’ all of the Mowden athletes emerged onto the final strait in excellent form. Whilst Matthew and Rory finished in commendable positions against strong opposition in the boys category, one could only marvel at the performance of the girls as they finished a magnificent 5th (Amber), 2nd (Eliza) and a stunning victory for Jemima.
The scene was set for the Under 13s and conditions could not have been more perfect for running. The pace in this category was relentless and Ben’s 18th position against mainly Year 8 opposition was fabulous. This was closely followed by George, Theodore and Reece who all put in a terrific effort. Meanwhile the success continued in the girls race as Fenella finished a fine 4th and Bridget a fabulous 2nd, only losing out to one of the finest girl cross country runners in the country.
After prize giving, 12 tired pupils settled back into our minibus for the trek back north, but heartened by a brilliant team performance and superb hospitality. We were indebted to Shrewsbury for their hospitality and many thanks to Mr. Lamb and Miss. Frohling for their company and support.
