Year 5 trip to Bede’s WorldBede world (24).jpg

On the 2nd February the year 5’s went to Bede’s World. When we arrived we met our guide called Clare. She showed us a model of how the monastery looked in Bede’s time and we talked about the life of monks and the work they did. Then we looked around the museum and drew pictures of monks working.

We left the museum and walked over to the monastery. Inside the church our guide told us to take off our coats and we put on monks’ habits which had cowls to cover our heads. We had to walk slowly up the aisle and sit on the altar steps. Then Clare told us about the few possessions of the monks and showed us the oldest stained glass in Europe. She had a wig with a shaved patch and Hugh tried it on. He looked very funny.

After we had our lunch we met our guide again. She took us to the farm and we saw some animals that would have been used by the Saxons. These included ducks, sheep, some goats and geese. There was also a huge pig called Hilda but she wouldn’t come out of her hut to see us.

Then we went inside a little hut which was below the ground and was to keep food cold, like a fridge. Then we went into a much bigger hut and sat around a fire and talked about the Saxons and told riddles.

We left the village and went to the education room. We chose a boy and a girl to dress up as Saxon people. Sasha was Ethelburga and Matthew Ridley was Chalfrith. We learnt about Saxon clothes and what they were made of and how they were dyed.
