On Friday 2nd October, Year 5 set off for Whitburnshank in the Cheviots, for our expedition.  We picked Ethan up on the way, who is Mr Hill's son. We arrived in Alwinton to collect the key for the cottage but it was not there and had not been dropped off. We waited for one and a half hours and it finally arrived in a black pick-up, to the cheers of everyone.

We got in and claimed our beds and had spaghetti bolognaise cooked by Mrs Debil. After some stories from everyone, including Josh's one about when he shook hands with a penguin, we went to bed.

On Saturday morning, we had bacon sandwiches for breakfast and then set off for our walk in the Cheviot Hills. The weather was not too bad when we set off, although a bit windy. Once we had climbed the first hill and after about 2km, the wind was so strong that we were being blown over. Mr Hill decided to change the plan and we dropped down the side of the hill to do a low-level walk instead. This was great fun as we crossed small footbridges and streams. We saw a line of soldiers with very heavy packs and guns, cross our path ahead and we watched them walk off into the distance. We returned to the cottage and did some group activities involving raw eggs and building newspaper bridges. Over the weekend we saw an eagle, a heron and we think, a kestrel.

On Sunday, after we had cleaned the cottage we left to go geocaching. We walked for about 2km to a hidden valley where no people go, to what Mr Hill called 'the back end of beyond' and an old ruin called Old Rookland. Here we found the cache. In the screw-lid box were some little treasures such as a bee sharpener and marbles. We left a message, took the bee sharpener and left a packet of fruit bursts. On the return to the minibus we had a draw out of a hat of all of the children, for the bee.

This was a great weekend and we would like to thank Mr Hill, Mrs Debil and Miss Matson for taking us.
