On Friday 18th September twenty five year
4 children set off for Whiteburnshank near Alwinton, in the Cheviots. The
journey was up a six mile track in the forest and the minibuses could not get
up the steep slope at the end, but only the Landrover.
On Friday evening we settled into the
bunkhouse and some boys and Mr Hill put up some tents, as six boys had to sleep
outside as there were not enough beds. The building had a proper kitchen,
toilets, electricity and hot water.
On Saturday, we all walked 14 kilometres in
the Cheviots and right up to the Scottish border. We had lunch at a remote
mountain refuge hut and the walk took six hours. We saw lots of soldiers
training in the hills and running in lines behind their instructor.
We had a quiz that night and went to bed at
9pm as we were all very tired.
On Sunday, we cleaned the whole building from top to bottom and set off for Harbottle Castle which was the next village. Here we did some Geocaching, which is finding a treasure box that had been left in the moat back in 2004. It had a log book and pencil, and little figures such as Napoleon and a bouncy ball. We didn't take anything but we wrote in the log book and left some milky ways in the box.
We would like to thank Mr Beardmore-Gray,
Mrs Knight and Miss Morrissey for coming with us and Mr Hill for organising the
whole weekend.
