Uppingham Skills Day
On Saturday afternoon (10th October), the Year 6 boarders set off for Uppingham in the minibus with Mrs White and Mr Spencer. We stopped on the journey to have a packed supper and arrived at Uppingham at 8.30pm and were taken off to different houses by Uppingham pupils.
In the morning, we met up at the sports centre. We met our activity leaders, who took us away to start our activities of the day.

Art and Ceramics
Our group went to the Leonardo art centre, where we sketched some of our designs of animals. Then we made a clay model of them. Our models were of a lizard, a rabbit, an octopus. Henry, Archie, Lottie and Millie
Orienteering and Shooting
In the morning we went to an orienteering course in a wood called Wakerley Woods. There were 21 green and white posts to find with a letter on. When we found it we had to get a stick and wet mud to write. We found seven posts. After lunch we went to do some target shooting in the .22 rifle range. We used .22 rifles with bolt action. We did some practice then a competition. I came first in the shooting. Will
Cycling
We went with the cycling group. We hired bikes and went on a ride round Rutland Water, the largest artificial lake in Europe. The ride was 20 miles long. First we had a five mile leg, which led by the lake. After the 2nd leg, by the main road, we had lunch. We had two more legs to go but had to abandon one as one of the other boys had to stop. Hector and Harry
Sports Centre
In the sports centre, we played lots of different sport, which included handball, which was really fun; tennis, cricket with a tennis racket and hockey. We went into the pool. The activities were good fun. Rosie could not swim as she did not have a costume with her. Rosie and Francesca
Cooking
Our group went to do cooking. First we went to the kitchen of the old pre-prep building called Windmill School. We prepared and cooked some Mexican hot chilli food with pasta and tomatoes and mince with sauce. In it there was pepper, salad, spicy sausage and more. After lunch, we went to another kitchen in Fairfield, where we made chocolate chip cookies. To make these, we used butter, flour, sugar, egg, vanilla and chocolate. It was great fun. Lucy and Sophie
Basha Building
We were driven to Wakerley Woods and were given dark make-up to put on our faces to act as camouflage. We also put camouflage on our clothes. We dug in and built our bashas, and put a canvas cover over the top. We cooked some mutton stew from army ration packets and the man ate our bacon and beans!. Our basha was better than the boys' group's. It was very good fun. Afterwards we cleaned off all the dark make-up. Victoria and Becky
Forensic Science
I went to the science lab where we were given a robbery to solve. We took fingerprints and studied clues in close detail. There were three suspects and we worked out which person had done the deed; it was the woman. When the activities were all over, we met up at the Buttery and had tea. We set off northward again and stopped for supper at Wetherby Services, before finally returning to Mowden at 9:00pm. We would all like to thank the staff and pupils at Uppingham for looking after us all so well, especially as we stayed overnight. We would also like to thank Mrs White and Mr Spencer for driving us all the way there and back. Matthew
