Yorkshire Dales

On Saturday the 15th of September ten 7th and 8th years went to the Yorkshire Dales. We set off after breakfast. Mr Hill, Miss Hogarth and Les came with us. It took us two and a half hours to get there including a stop off at the camping shop. When we arrived we set up our tents and had lunch. We then put on wetsuits, wellies, helmets and head-torches. The teachers had to wear funny woolly suits and overalls. We set off to the caves and on the way we met some people from Sedbergh including Tim Raglan, Alex Pugh and Harry Meadows. We then carried on to the caves.

The first thing we did was look down Alum Pot which was a 360ft deep pit. We then went into Long Churn cave. The entrance was very tight and we had to crawl through on our bellies. We went through lots of tunnels then we had to climb down a bit of rock. Miss Hogarth fell in a 5ft deep pool. Next we went through a part which is known as the cheese press.

Fergus volunteered to go first. The cheese press was so tight that you had to put your head sideways as it wouldn't fit normally. Fergus got stuck the first time so came back and tried again. This time he got to the end but he didn't know how to get down, because he thought it was a 30 ft drop. In fact it was only a 3 ft drop but Fergus waited patiently until Les came to help him. We all followed afterwards.

Next we had to walk through some very deep pools which was exciting and also cold. Then we came to a deep pool with a waterfall. We all jumped into the pool while Les climbed the waterfall and attached a rope for us. We put one foot on each side of the waterfall and climbed up. When we got to the top, we saw daylight.

We got out of the cave after being down there for three and a half hours. Les gave us a lecture on how we had to be careful not to fall over walking to the camp site. He then turned around and fell over a tuft of grass. We all burst out laughing as we thought he was joking but in fact he wasn't. He really had fallen over and hurt his thumb.

We went back to the camp site and got warmed up. Then we went to the near village of Horton for fish and chips. The fish and chips were really nice and warmed us up. Then we went back to the minibus then went back to the camp site. Next morning we woke up at 8:00am. We had breakfast and with a bit of a struggle we got packed up and took the tents down. Imogen and Briony came to see us. We all piled into the minibus and set off for Horton. When we got there we parked the bus on the side of the road.

We walked for about a hour before we got to the place we were heading for, which was called Hull-pot. Hull-pot was a massive hole in the ground which was naturally formed by water. It was roughly 300m in length 100m in width and 100m deep. It was amazing. It then took us 2 hours to get back as we went a different route.

When we got back to the bus we drove back to the campsite. We hooked the trailer onto the back and we headed back to school. We stopped on the way back in a layby for lunch.

On behalf of the childrenwho went on the trip I would like to thank Les, Miss Hogarth and, most of all, Mr Hill for organising the trip.
