Visit to Durham Cathedral

On Thursday, 8th May, the 5th Years visited Durham Cathedral for a tour. We walked through the market square of Durham, past the Castle to the Cathedral.

Nick Barton, ex-Headmaster of Newlands School gave us an informative talk on the building, and some of its 1000 years of history.

Durham is a World Heritage site and perhaps the greatest Norman Building in England.

It is most famous for being the final burial place of St. Cuthbert, the Northumbrian saint, whose body was moved around Northumberland for 600 years, before it was finally brought to Durham in 995.

We also looked at Venerable Bede’s tomb and the Miner’s Memorial. We looked at some of the stained glass, including the Marks and Spencer’s Window designed in 1995, depicting the Last Supper. We examined the lectern, and looked at the Bishop’s throne among other things.

There was much to learn in a short space of time and we could now return and guide our families around, and maybe climb the Tower another time.

We would like to thank Ian for driving the mini bus and Mrs Sale and Mr Thomas for accompanying us.
