Maths Fun Day Trip to Merchiston

On Tuesday the 13th of March four of the sixth years and four of the seventh years got up very early so they could travel up to Merchiston for a maths fun day. Some people thought it was a bit of an oxymoron.

When we arrived at Merchiston we were shown to the dining room for a drink and biscuit. We were then shown to the theatre. The first objective was to sit with one of the teachers from a different school. We had to do lots of different maths problems in different groups. We were split into two groups - A and B.

There were lots of different problems like, making a square out of some shapes, finding a word by doing a sum and then finding that number on the word. We thought it was quite easy but there were some difficult problems. When we had finished that exercise we stopped for lunch. There were Yorkshire puddings with meat, pasta or salad. Everyone enjoyed it. Straight after lunch we returned to the theatre. And found are seats, we were given a difficult Sudoku for the time being.

The afternoon activity was a relay in pairs. One person from each team had to go up to their teacher and collect a question sheet then take to the other pair from your team. And when they had finished they took it to he teacher and collected an answer sheet for the first pair. Unlucky for the A team because they were in fourth place before the relay and they slipped down a bit. This activity went on for an hour. Once it had finished we waited for the marks.

Everyone did well but no Mowdenian team managed to receive 3rd, 2nd or 1st. We had a good journey back. On behalf of the group that went we would like to thank Mrs White and Mr Muto for taking us so far on a great trip.
