Durham Cathedral

On Thursday the 10th of May the 5th years, Mrs Sale and Mrs Sample travelled to Durham Cathedral for a scripture trip.

When we got there we had a look at the sanctuary knocker, which is a very large Chinese looking door knocker which was used for the people to knock with to go inside the church to be safe.

Then we met our guide whose name is name was Nick. He took us to the main part of the church which is called the nave because the roof looks like the nave of a ship.

After that he took us to the Galilee Chapel which is where the venerable Bede was buried in a black marble tomb. Then Nick took us to the memorial of the CCF. There was also a memorial for the Durham minors.

Then we were taken to see St Cuthbert's coffin, where Nick asked Ione and Angus to light a candle which they placed on top of his coffin, and we all said a prayer. After that he took to see the bishop's throne which is the tallest one in Europe.

Then we made our way back to the nave where there was a very big black font with a dove placed on top. It was very beautiful. Then Nick told that the circumference of the pillars is 8.6 ft, the same as their height. After that we were taken to the bishop's pulpit which had a sculpture of a pelican feeding its blood to her starving children.

Then we said goodbye to Nick and went to see a video of St Cuthbert's life as a monk in Jarrow and after that we had a lovely picnic lunch.

We would like to thank Mrs Sale and Mrs Sample for organising the trip.
