Scholars’ Spanish Lunch
As part of their post-scholarship programme, 8W have been studying Spanish, both as a language and a culture. There’s no better way to explore that culture than to taste the delights of true “Cocina Español!”
The “tapas” arrived first, fiery “chorizo”, succulent olives, light and delicious slices of “tortilla” and, as a little experiment, a nibble on the tentacles of a “pulpo” in oil!
The main course was a magnificent "Paella al campo con gambas y mejillones”, created by Pauline Hutchinson. This mighty dish contained luscious pink prawns, plump mussels in their shells and some of Dumfriesshire’s finest “conejo!” (wild bunny) The fluffy yellow arroz gave off a lovely aroma and the whole dish was a triumph, leaving everyone feeling very full.
However, more was to come – a smooth and delicate crema quemada, (a Spanish version of Crème brûlée) and we finished off with a taste of the traditional Spanish sweet, a Turron con almendras .
Many thanks go to Mr Debil for organising the lunch and to Pauline and her kitchen staff for putting on this feast.
