Rain Lashes Mowden
It had been raining all week (all holidays, some would say!) - but no one was prepared for the torrents of rain that hit the school on Saturday, 6th September. We were not the only ones to suffer - the whole Tyne Valley was affected and the people of Morpeth were especially badly hit.
Nothing, however, would stop the hardy souls of the 5th Year boarders from venturing out into the rain - suitably clad, of course! And some astonishing sights met our eyes - almost the whole of the top pitches was under water, the staff houses were sitting in big puddles, the entrance to South Drive was off limits to all but 4x4s, the road down to the pavilion was a gushing river and the pavilion itself was surrounded by a huge lake!
Most extraordinary of all, however, were the huge, wobbly islands of turf across Park Field that had been pushed up by the sheer force of the water cascading through the field-drains [see above]. There was also a great fountain springing out of the bottom of the bank by the rounders pitch.
Sunday, and especially Monday, have seen rather better weather but there's more rain on the way, they say - so keep those fingers crossed!
