English

In this vital core subject, the aim of the department is to foster a happy and effective working atmosphere where all pupils can achieve their full potential. Our main aim is to place the development of each pupil at the centre of what we do. Pupils should feel that their progress is being enhanced as a result of our teaching.

Special needs must be catered for through distinctive provisions which complement the main stream. However, we also recognise that every individual has a special need and we must ensure that pupils' potential in the centre of the ability range is not overlooked and that the most able pupils remain motivated and hard working.

We see the subject being divided into the following key areas:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Grammar
  • Spelling
  • Oral work
  • Handwriting

We feel it is important that the basics of the language are seen as important, so areas such as spelling, handwriting, punctuation and basic grammar receive unashamed attention throughout a pupil's time at Mowden. By their final year we expect pupils to be able to perform at the top end of their ability.

Teaching aims:

  1. Pupils should be taught to express themselves correctly and appropriately and to read accurately and with understanding.
  2. In writing, pupils should be taught to use correct spelling and punctuation and follow grammatical conventions. They should also be taught to organise their writing in logical and coherent forms.
  3. In speaking, pupils should be taught to use language precisely and appropriately.
  4. Pupils should be taught to listen to others, and to respond and build on their ideas and views constructively.
  5. In reading, pupils should be taught strategies to help them read with understanding, to locate and use information, to follow a process or argument and summarise, and to synthesise and adapt what they learn from their reading.

In the class room our pupils can expect, inter alia:

Independent reading and writing (both factual and creative);

Phonic and spelling investigations and practice;

Comprehension work;

Note-making;

Reviewing and evaluating;

Proof-reading and editing;

Vocabulary extension and dictionary work;

Handwriting practice; including the use of different forms of handwriting for different purposes (for example: print for labelling; a clear, neat hand for 'exam quality' work; a faster script for notes).

Practice and investigations in grammar, punctuation and sentence construction;

Preparing presentations for the class.

In teaching English, we aim to encourage our pupils to:

  • Articulate their thoughts, feelings and ideas effectively in both written and spoken English.
  • Gain an appreciation of creative/crafting skills employed in both the writer's and speaker's art.
  • Develop both the support and co-operation required for group work and the self-discipline and self-motivation needed for individual work.
  • Experiment with their own writing and speaking, developing a style of their own, or one appropriate to the task.

In a wider context, we aim to:

  • Encourage pupils to take part in school, local and national competitions.
  • Publicise and promote interest in theatre productions, art festivals and other English-related activities both locally and nationally.
  • Develop cross-curricular activities with other departments.
